Was Mahler a total control freak?
Mahler was obsessively specific about which instruments he wanted, when they sounded in his works, and exactly how many there were. He was known to demand “as many harps as possible”. Or call for rarely seen additions to an orchestra, like the tenorhorn, mandolin, or guitar. He even introduced unusual sounds into the musical mix: cowbells and a giant hammer found their way into his symphonies! Unimaginable but Mahler did it.
