The Black Amazon | Vanuza Cardoso & the Abacatal Quilombola Community

Meaningful progress in the mission to Protect the Amazon can only start with uplifting the communities at the center of the fight – who are not only on the frontlines of the climate crisis, but who are also driving real solutions to safeguard our planet. Our new series, ‘Defenders of the Forest,’ brings these voices to the forefront.

Meet Vanuza Cardoso, a spiritual leader, human rights advocate, and proud member of the Abacatal Quilombola community. Across Brazil, more than 1.3 million Quilombola people live in both rural and urban areas — and nearly a third reside in the Amazon, where they serve as ‘guardians of biodiversity’. Yet, due to systemic racism, marginalization, and lack of visibility, their voices are too often left out of global climate discussions.

It’s not just that they deserve a seat at the table at #COP30 – we need their knowledge, leadership, and lived experience to protect our planet and fight the climate crisis at large. As Vanuza reminds us: “There is no support for frontline communities without support for the Quilombola people.”
