Former Russian national team captain Igor Denisov has spoken out against his country’s conflict in Ukraine, expressing worry that he may be “jailed or assassinated” for doing so.
He is the highest-profile Russian athlete, present or retired, above the age of 38, to speak out against the war.
Denisov, who led the Russian national team from 2012 to 2016, remarked in an interview with a sports writer, “These incidents are devastating. The situation is quite terrible. I don’t know whether I’ll go to prison or be murdered for stating this, but it’s the truth.
