How Coldplay Urged 6 Brazilian States to Protect the Amazon at ‘Global Citizen Live’

For the first time in history, climate change is causing the Amazon Rainforest to emit more greenhouse gasses faster than it’s able to absorb.

That’s why in 2021, ahead of the Global Citizen Live festival, Coldplay and thousands of Global Citizens, Re:wild, and the Center for Environmental Peacebuilding called on world leaders to urgently defend the planet. This meant demanding protection for almost 60% of the Amazon rainforest and stopping the rapid loss of precious rural land and ecologically diverse coastline throughout the Northeast of Brazil.

Six Brazilian states answered the call, announcing pledges to drastically reduce CO2 emissions and declare over 1.7 million hectares of forest as protected land. Today, all six show promising progress on their commitments.
